Brian D. Cohen, MD has been performing chin augmentation surgery on both men and women for many years. A compassionate person as well as an eminent plastic surgeon, he is dedicated to improving your self-image as well as refining your facial features. Dr. Cohen has offices conveniently located in Great Neck and Manhattan.

Reasons You May Seek Chin Augmentation

There are several reasons you may feel dissatisfied with your chin and how it detracts from your other facial features. You may have beautiful eyes, for example, but feel that your weak chin draws attention away from them. A chin augmentation, during which a precisely fitted implant is placed on the bone of your chin, can make a remarkable improvement in the contours of your chin, neck, and jawline.

By augmenting the size of your chin and shaping it with care, Dr. Cohen can create a harmonious balance in the appearance of your facial features, a balance so natural it feels inborn. You may seek chin augmentation to:

  • Correct the appearance of a recessed chin
  • Make your chin proportionate to your other features
  • Improve the definition between your neck and jaw
  • Reduce the prominence of a full or “double” chin
  • Strengthen your jawline

No matter what your reason for seeking chin augmentation, when you meet with Dr. Cohen, you will know that you have come to the right professional.

Your Initial Consultation Is Invaluable

Dr. Cohen will give you his full attention, provide you with explanations of the chin augmentation procedure, and answer all your questions. During your consultation, he will:

  • Discuss your goals for your chin augmentation
  • Evaluate the shape of your chin and jawline
  • Take photos to examine in-depth and to use for “before” images
  • Explain your chin augmentation options
  • Recommend combination procedures if any are necessary
  • Develop and explain his surgical plan

As Dr. Cohen will explain, the best candidates for chin augmentation do not smoke, are in generally good health, and have realistic expectations of their results.

The Chin Augmentation Surgical Procedure

Chin augmentation surgery is performed in an outpatient setting under general or local anesthesia. Dr. Cohen will make a small incision either underneath the chin or inside the mouth through which he will create a pocket for the chin implant. The chin implant will be placed in front of the chin bone and under the muscles. He may use real bone or fat tissue taken from the belly by liposuction to augment your chin or an implant made of silicone, Teflon, or Dacron.

Once the chin implant is permanently attached to the bone, the incision will be closed with removable sutures. The procedure takes between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the extent of what has to be done and on whether you are having a concurrent procedure.

Your chin implant, once you have healed after surgery, will feel like your original chin bone, and it is unlikely that anyone who doesn’t know will be able to tell that you have had the procedure.

Recovery from Chin Augmentation Surgery

Though every case is different, patients usually need only short downtime after chin augmentation surgery and may be back to work and other daily activities within 2 weeks. Dr. Cohen will give you instructions about what steps to take during early healing, such as sleeping face-up with your head elevated, eating only soft foods, and avoiding strenuous activity for a period of weeks.

You will likely have swelling and bruising in the days immediately following surgery and numbness in the affected area for several months. Any discomfort you experience after the procedure should be easily controlled with pain medication or cold compresses.

Enjoying the Results of Your Chin Augmentation

The improvement in your facial contours will be visible immediately after surgery. Swelling will gradually disappear over the coming weeks and the best results will be visible in a few months. Your scar will scarcely be visible and will fade with time as long as you protect it from sun exposure, and your facial improvement will be permanent.

Although all surgeries carry a small element of risk, chin augmentation is a safe procedure, especially when you have a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Brian D. Cohen.

Why Some Patients Have Other Cosmetic Facial Work Done at the Same Time

In contrast to facelift or neck lift surgery, chin augmentation actually changes the physical shape and profile of the face. For this reason, some chin augmentation patients decide to combine treatments to give themselves a more complete makeover. If you are interested in having such work done at the same time, Dr. Cohen will be happy to discuss possibilities with you, such as:

  • Cheek augmentation with implants or fillers
  • Rhinoplasty (nose surgery)
  • Fat grafting to other parts of the face (e.g. under the eyes)
  • Neck liposuction to remove excess fat from beneath the chin

Depending on your needs and wishes, Dr. Cohen will help you decide whether it makes sense to have another procedure performed at the same time as your chin augmentation.
