Trends in Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery

What are the cosmetic procedures that are most often being requested today?

The popularity of cosmetic procedures has been steadily growing. This includes surgical procedures as well as those that are non-invasive. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has been documenting that growth along with a wide range of statistical information related to cosmetic procedures performed in the United States since 1992.

According to the most recent annual report from the ASPS, there were 24 million cosmetic procedures done in the U.S. These were separated into the following general types:

  • 1.8 million surgical procedures
  • 16.3 million minimally-invasive procedures
  • 5.9 million reconstructive procedures

Which Procedures Are the Most Popular?

The ASPS has broken out the most popular cosmetic procedures in each category. They are:

2019 Top 5 Cosmetic Surgical Procedures

  • Breast augmentation surgery – 299,715
  • Liposuction – 265,209
  • Eyelid surgery – 211,005
  • Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) – 207,284
  • Facelift – 123,685

2019 Top 5 Minimally-Invasive or Non-Surgical Procedures

  • Botox (Botulinum toxin type A) – 7.7 million
  • Soft tissue fillers – 2.7 million
  • Chemical peel – 1.3 million
  • Laser hair removal – 1 million
  • IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment – 685,755

2019 Top 5 Reconstructive Procedures

  • Tumor removal – 4.4 million
  • Laceration repair – 249,141
  • Maxillofacial surgery – 207,862
  • Scar revision – 181,132
  • Hand surgery – 141,139

Historically, women have accounted for the vast majority of cosmetic procedures, surgical and non-invasive, and that continues to be the case. Things have changed for men, though. Their portion of the overall number of procedures has risen by over 40 percent in the last 10 years or so and is currently 8 percent of the total.

The number one cosmetic surgical procedure requested by women, breast augmentation, has held that spot since 2006. For men, it is rhinoplasty, which is nose surgery. For both women and men, Botox is far and away the most popular of the non-invasive procedures.

What Has Caused the Increase in Popularity of Cosmetic Procedures?

Cosmetic surgeries have been performed for thousands of years. In fact, there are written reports of these types of surgeries dating back 4,000 years. It only seems like a relatively new phenomenon because of the increased number being done and the fact that most people no longer feel the need to hide them.

What has caused this change? Many give a large amount of the credit to millennials, sometimes referred to as Gen Y, who have proven willing to own their desire for self-improvement, including the use of cosmetic procedures. They tend to be open and upfront about such issues, and this attitude seems to have also influenced baby boomers and Gen Xers to follow suit.
