Brian D. Cohen, M.D.

Servicing Great Neck and Nassau County

One of the undeniable signs of aging is sagging, flabby skin on the upper arms. Even on people who are at the correct weight and exercise regularly, loose skin under their upper arms may prevent them from feeling comfortable in sleeveless clothing, bathing suits, or any time their arms are exposed. If you are troubled by sagging skin under your upper arms, there is a cosmetic procedure that will set things straight. The procedure is known as a Brachioplasty or arm lift and is routinely performed by Brian D. Cohen, M.D., a talented plastic surgeon with offices in both Manhattan and Nassau County.

In addition to other impressive credentials, Dr. Cohen has been recognized for plastic surgery by his peers in Super Doctors, New York 2019 Edition for the 7th year in a row. Do yourself a favor and check out his delicate aesthetic work for yourself by examining the before and after images in the photo gallery on his website. If you’re considering a Brachioplasty or other cosmetic procedure, Dr. Brian D. Cohen is a fine choice. He is not only a gifted surgeon but a caring physician, dedicated to listening carefully to his patients’ worries and wishes during relaxed consultations.

Reasons for a Brachioplasty

In addition to being affected by the ordinary process of aging, during which the skin loses elasticity, some patients have inadvertently worsened the problem by losing a large amount of weight. While losing weight intentionally is usually a productive step toward greater health, losing weight, particularly if it is done rapidly, may leave the extra skin that enclosed the excess fat with no place to go.

The Initial Consultation

Dr. Cohen takes his work very seriously, both from a medical and artistic standpoint. For this reason, he will take time with you during your initial consultation. He wants to make certain that you understand the precise nature of the procedure and that your expectations about the results of a Brachioplasty are realistic. He also wants to be sure that he knows all the relevant information about you and your health.

He will review your medical history thoroughly and discuss which medications (prescribed or over-the-counter) and supplements you’re presently taking. Of course, he will not be the only one asking the questions. You should ask him anything you’d like to know about the Brachioplasty itself and the recovery period.

The Brachioplasty Procedure

During an arm lift procedure, Dr. Cohen makes an incision beneath your arm, extending from your elbow to the armpit. The length of the incision may vary, depending upon how much skin is going to be removed. In cases in which excess fat remains in the area, you may choose to have him perform liposuction as well the arm lift to rid your upper arm of excess fat before the extra skin tissue is removed and tightened.

Once any extra fat is suctioned out, Dr. Cohen will cut away excess skin and pull the remaining skin taut. The incision will be closed with stitches. The procedure typically takes one to three hours and may be done under local anesthesia with sedation or under general anesthesia. After the procedure, your arm will be bandaged until the incision is fully healed.

Minimal Incision Brachioplasty

Dr. Cohen is pleased and proud to be able to offer his patients a minimal incision Brachioplasty, in which the incision is hidden within your armpit or on the inside of your arm. This innovative procedure, much to his patients’ delight, substantially reduces arm circumference and eliminates flabby underarm tissue so that they can return to wearing sleeveless clothing when desired. In research studies, patients report the following advantages to minimal incision Brachioplasty:

  • Less visible scar due
  • Arm circumference reduction of up to 25 percent
  • Removal of most hair-bearing axillary skin, leaving underarms nearly hairless

Minimal-incision Brachioplasty is typically the first-choice in arm reduction procedures. Though techniques may have to be altered for patients who have obese arms and/or have lost skin tone and elasticity due to aging, Dr. Cohen is able to perform this surgery on most of his brachioplasty patients. He is always careful to make sure that the scar the minimal incision leaves underneath or on the inside of the arm where it is least visible during normal poses. Also remember, scars fade. In exchange, you will have tight, shapely, more attractive upper arms.

Recovery After Brachioplasty

After any surgery, it is very important to adhere to your doctor’s instructions so that complete healing will take place and you will not have any complications. After an arm lift, Dr. Cohen will want you to avoid exercise for several weeks, though if your work is in no way strenuous, you may be able to return to it within a week.

For three to four weeks you will have to avoid lifting your arms above shoulder level or extending your arms in ways that stretch the incision. Dr. Cohen will let you know which medication you should use for pain and whether you will need to take an antibiotic to avoid infection.

You and your loved ones will see a marked difference within a day or two after the procedure and your arm will look better and better as the postsurgical swelling and bruising subside. After about two weeks, your upper arms will appear more supple and toned. The effects of arm lifts are typically long-lasting. Nonetheless, as you continue to age, your skin will lose some firmness. The more stable your weight remains the more likely you are to continue to have arms that look young, lithe, and smoothly contoured.
