Why Women Have Breast Augmentation with Silicone Implants

Breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty) does more than simply enlarge your breasts. It is also effective in re-proportioning asymmetrical breasts, correcting congenital breast defects, and volumizing breasts that have flattened as a result of pregnancy, weight loss, or surgery.

Whether you are discouraged to see the changes your breasts have gone through or have always wished your breasts could be fuller and more attractive, breast augmentation will provide you with the satisfaction of having breasts like those you have always admired and envied. In addition, your breasts, rejuvenated with silicone implants, will feel as natural as they look. Even more important, silicone breast implants are safe and FDA approved for women at least 22 years of age.

Silicone breast implants, which feel a bit more like natural breast tissue than saline implants, are filled with silicone gel. An advantage of silicone implants is that even if they leak, they will not collapse. If you choose silicone implants, however, you may have to visit your plastic surgeon on a regular basis to make sure your implants are functioning properly — something Dr. Cohen can assess through an ultrasound or MRI screening.

Types of Silicone Breast Implants

There are several types of silicone breast implants, including:

Gummy bear breast implants

Gummy bear breast implants are firmer than saline because their gel is thicker, retain their shape even when the shell is broken, but require a slightly longer incision. Also, they also may rotate, negatively affecting the shape of the breast, and require a corrective procedure.

Round breast implants

Round breast implants tend to make breasts appear fuller and project further than form-stable implants. They are also less likely to rotate than gummy bear implants.

Smooth breast implants

Smooth breast implants feel softer than other silicone implants and may move more naturally, though they may have visible or palpable rippling below the skin.

Preparing for Breast Augmentation with Silicone Implants

The most crucial preparation for this procedure is choosing an experienced, board-certified surgeon like Dr. Cohen to perform it. Otherwise, the preparation is simple. Before your breast augmentation, you will be required to get a blood test and to temporarily stop taking any drugs that can increase bleeding, such as aspirin or NSAIDs. You may have to adjust other medications as well and it is strongly recommended that you stop smoking.

Although the surgery is outpatient, you will have to arrange to be driven to and from the surgical site. You will also need someone to stay with you for at least the first night following surgery.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia so you will be unaware and pain-free.

Dr. Cohen will make incisions where they are as inconspicuous as possible, usually either on the underside of your breasts (inframammary) or around your areolas, the dark areas surrounding your nipples (periareolar). You can rely on him to pick the best location for the incision after considering all relevant factors — the fact that he will be using a silicone implant, the degree of enlargement you desire, your particular anatomy, and, in some cases, your personal preference.

In order to place your silicone implant properly, Dr. Cohen will create a pocket at the site. This pocket can be created under the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue, in front of the chest wall. There are advantages and disadvantages to each location which Dr. Cohen will discuss with you. He will determine which approach will be most effective in your case.

When he has completed your breast augmentation with silicone implants, Dr. Cohen will close the incisions with sutures that are self-dissolving and so will not have to be removed. Any visible scarring will fade over time.

Possible Complications of Breast Augmentation with Silicone Implants

No surgical procedures are without risks of complications. In some cases, patients may experience:

  • Buildup of scar tissue
  • Infection
  • Implant leakage or rupture
  • Change in breast sensation

With Dr. Cohen in charge, risks are diminished.

What to Expect During Recovery from Breast Augmentation

Immediately after surgery, you will spend about an hour in the recovery area so that you can be closely monitored. Your breasts will be bandaged and you will be wearing a support bra to protect your breasts and minimize swelling. Once you are stable, you will be discharged.

You will be given specific postoperative instructions about how to treat and clean the affected area and what type of bra to wear during recovery. You will also be given any necessary prescriptions for pain or to prevent infection. Dr. Cohen will advise you about which activities to avoid (e.g. bending, heavy lifting) and when you can resume your normal exercise routine.

Surgical pain will subside within a few days, but you may experience soreness and swelling for a few weeks. Remember, once the bandages come off, you will be able to appreciate and admire the contours of your newly enhanced breasts.
